Title: Malaria Immunopathogenesis: Interplay between T cells and Endothelial Cells

Biography : Laurent Renia is currently the executive director of the Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN). Laurent Renia obtained his Ph.D. in 1991 Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France where he studied the immune response against the pre-erythrocytic phase of malaria. He continued to work on malaria immunology in New York University (1991-1992). He then returned to Paris in 1993 where he obtained a permanent position as a junior research scientist at the French national of Institute of Health (INSERM) working on malaria immunology in the INSERM Unit 313 at the Hospital Pitie-Salpetriere in Paris. He moved to the INSERM Unit 445 at the Institute Cochin in Paris where he started his own group in 1997. Between 2001-2006, he became research director at INSERM, co-director, and director of the Department of Immunology at the Institute Cochin. He joined SIgN in 2007. He holds adjunct Professorships with the Department of Microbiology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore, at the School of biological Sciences, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He has published more than 240 articles and book chapters in Infectious Diseases and Immunology. He is an Academic Editor for PLoS ONE, Infection and Immunity, Microbial Pathogenesis and Frontiers in Immunology.

Title: Systems Based Approaches to Identify New Targets for Intervention Against Malaria

Biography : Denise Doolan is a Professorial Research Fellow and NHMRC Principal Research Fellow at the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM), James Cook University, Cairns, Australia. She is also Deputy Director of AITHM, Director of the JCU Centre for Molecular Therapeutics, and on Executive Board of the International Society for Vaccines. Denise is a molecular immunologist, working on the development of vaccines, immunotherapeutics, and diagnostics for infectious and chronic diseases that impact global public health, with a particular focus on malaria. Her research program spans host-pathogen immunity, antigen discovery, vaccine engineering, and biomarker discovery. She has a specific interest in systems immunology and T cell mediated immunity against infectious diseases.

Title: Insights into Mechanisms and Targets of Human Immunity to Malaria to Advance Vaccine Development

Biography : James Beeson is a Deputy Director at the Burnet Institute and Head of the Malaria Immunity and Vaccines Laboratory. The major focus of his research is aimed at understanding the targets and mechanisms of protective immunity to malaria and how immunity is acquired and maintained, in clinical and population studies in malaria endemic countries and in malaria vaccine trials. He is using this knowledge to advance the development of highly protective and long-lasting vaccines for malaria.

Title: Potential Immunotherapeutic Intervention in Malaria Infection by Targeting Interleukin-35

Biography : Dr. Rusliza Basir is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia where she has been a faculty member since 2007. She received her Bachelor of Science (BSc. Hons) degree in Pharmacology from the University of Liverpool, UK in 1994 and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Immunopharmacology from the University of Manchester, UK in 1998. After completing her Ph.D., she accepted a position as a lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, Universiti Sains Malaysia before joining Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2007 where she has been teaching pharmacology to the Medical students until now. She has more than 20 years of research experience focusing on malaria infection. Her involvement in malaria research started way back during her undergraduate final year project in which she was looking into the effects of malaria on drug metabolism. She then pursued her Ph.D. on the immunopharmacological aspects of malaria and has since focused on targeting the immune system for immunotherapeutic development for the infection. She has more than 80 referred publications in reputable journals and has presented 85 research works at the conferences nationally and internationally. She has also supervised many postgraduate students at Master and Ph.D. levels. Apart from teaching and research, she is actively involving in learned societies and has held important positions such as honorary secretary and vice president for the Malaysian Society of Pharmacology & Physiology. She is also an active member of the Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine.

Title: Is Simian Malaria a Threat to Malaria Elimination?

Biography : Indra Vythilingam (Ph.D.) is currently a Professor in the Department of Parasitology, University of Malaya (UM). She worked as a Principal Research Scientist, in Environmental Health Institute, Singapore prior to her appointment at UM. She has contributed vastly to the field of vector biology and control for the past 30 years when she worked in the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in Kuala Lumpur. She has successfully completed many research projects on vectors of malaria, Japanese encephalitis, dengue, and filariasis. She has been working on simian malaria since 2005 and incriminated the vectors of simian malaria in Malaysia. She has published more than 130 articles in peer-reviewed international and local journals. She served as a WHO consultant on many occasions and recently served as a member of the WHO Vector control advisory group on new tools (2013-2016). She was awarded the Sandosham Gold medal in 2007 by the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine for her contribution towards parasitology and Tropical Medicine. In 2017, she received Malaysia’s Research Star Award for outstanding national research in Tropical diseases from the Ministry of Higher Education and Elsevier. She is a subject editor for "Parasites and Vectors".

Associate Professor, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, QLD, Australia

Title: The Relevance of Checkpoint Inhibitors for Malaria

Biography : Associate Professor Michelle Wykes is Group Leader of the Molecular Immunology Laboratory at the QIMR Berghofer. She is an expert on "immune checkpoints" which are the basis for a new type of cancer treatment known as "immunotherapy". Her research in "immune checkpoints" started when she was looking for the reason Plasmodium spp., which cause malaria, could evade immunity. Her group published a paradigm-shifting study which showed Programmed cell death-1 ligand 2 was essential for immunity. This line of research, published in Immunity, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Nature Reviews Immunology has led to several patents and funding to develop two novel treatments for cancer.

Title: Developing a Whole Parasite Blood-stage Malaria Vaccine

Biography : Dr. Danielle Stanisic is an Associate Research Leader at the Institute for Glycomics, Griffith University where she co-leads the Malaria Vaccine Development Program. Her ongoing research has a translational focus and involves transitioning whole parasite vaccine candidates from pre-clinical animal studies into clinical development and their evaluation in clinical trials. She is also applying vaccine platforms developed within the Malaria Vaccine Program to other parasites of medical and veterinary importance.

Title: Identifying Cellular Responses that Drive Protective Antibody Development

Biography : Dr Michelle Boyle completed her PhD in 2012 at the Burnet Institute and Melbourne University with a focus on developing methods to study Plasmodium falciparum malaria invasion of red blood cells and progressing towards a vaccine and drug development. Following her PhD, Michelle was awarded an NHMRC Early Career (CJ Martin) Fellowship and completed a two-year post-doctoral position at the University of California, San Francisco. Her work identified a number of age and malaria exposure-dependent changes to T cells that contribute to naturally acquired immunity in children in high exposure settings. Dr Boyle returned to Australia in 2015, where she worked collaborative projects between the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin, and the Burnet Institute, to identify mechanisms contributing to the acquisition of immunity against multiple malaria species in the South East Asia region. In 2018, she established her lab ‘Human Malaria Immunology’ at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Queensland as an EMBL Australia Group Leader.

Title: Malaria Elimination in India and Roadblocks

Biography : Dr Abhinav Sinha (MD, PhD) is currently a Scientist E at ICMR- National Institute of Malaria Research, India (Since September 2016). He obtained his MBBS & MD (PSM) at Rani Durgawati University, NSCB Medical College, Jabalpur (MP), India in 2000 & 2004, respectively. He then moved to University of Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom and obtained his MRes (Molecular Parasitology) and PhD (Molecular Functions in Malaria) in 2009 & 2014. He then joined the Department of Public Health, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden as Post-doctoral Researcher and completed in 2015. Dr. Sinha was rewarded with several prestigious awards, scholarships, and international conferences travel grants. He supervised 1 MRes student in UK, mentored 9 MD & 8 MSc students in India and currently supervising 3 post-doctoral, 5 doctoral, and 1 MSc students in India.

Title: Transcription Factor T-bet in B Cells Modulates Germinal Center Polarization and Antibody Affinity Maturation in Response to Malaria

Biography : Diana Hansen completed her PhD studies at the University of Buenos Aires in the context of a collaborative program between the National Institute of Parasitology in Argentina and the National Veterinary Institute in Uppsala, Sweden. She turned to malaria research during her postdoctoral training at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Melbourne, Australia, where she established an internationally recognised program to investigate inflammatory responses responsible for the induction of severe malaria. Diana is now a Laboratory Head in the Division of Infectious Disease and Immune Defence at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. Diana is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Medicine in The University of Melbourne. Diana’s main current research focuses on finding solutions to tackle two devastating mosquito-borne infectious diseases, malaria, and dengue, which together account for 600 million clinical cases worldwide annually. Her main interests include understanding mechanisms regulating pathogenesis and induction of immunity and resistance to these infectious diseases and she is pursuing those goals using both pre-clinical infection models as well as human studies in malaria-endemic areas. Diana’s research is primarily funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Australian Academy of Science.
